I think that I've reached a point that I'm done with Prakticas. This is the fourth one that develops an erratic shutter AFTER I've put a film in and honestly I cannot afford spending money on cameras that die a film later. Unfortunately I cannot recommend you buying one, I think the much cheaper Zenits are better build or you can pay a bit more and get a nice Fujica or Chinon.
The venerable Nikon F801s This is a review of the Nikon F801s and it's progenitor, the F801. I've been using the F801s for a few months now and I own a plain F801 since 2017. As it is usually the case, it was an impulsive buy, it was for £0.99 with no bids online and I decided that I wanted to compare it with the old trusty F801. * Background information and history. Nikon joined the AF race quite early on in 1986 - Minolta's surprising announcement of the Dynax 7000/9000 the year before forced Nikon to release a modified version of the F301 with an AF module - the F501AF. Canon joined a year later with the first EOS camera (EOS 650) featuring a new lens mount with no backwards compatibility. Nikon's F501 used a very basic AF module with 96 CCDs - this was eventually replaced by the "legendary" (the emphasis is mine) AM200 module (an array of 20 by 10 CCDs) which found its way in all AF Nikons - from F401 to the F4 and even the third generation ...

Just noticed your post I know its over a year ago but wanted to see if you resolved your issue with the BX20, just got a BX 20 myself. Shutter speed is a bit eratic when battery is just about done. Also when loading camera with film shutter speed must be at speed setting B. Just wondering if maybe its anything to do with that. I'm about to go and buy a new battery will report back and see if that helps because the shutter speeds are electronicly controlled.
ReplyDeleteHi Si,
ReplyDeleteNo, in my case there was something wrong with the shutter. According to my experience, the B-series Practicas are notorious for their shutter problems (see the review on the BC-1). I hope it is a battery problem in your case though.
Hi just got my new battery and popped it in the camera fortunately everything is working well. But you are right from what I have read on the internet sticky shutters are a problem. What camera are you using now?

From all those reviewed here, I have only kept the Leica, the Canon EOS 5, the Minolta XD-7, the Minolta 9xi and the Pentax MX. The rest have been either sold or given away.
